Abstract

The research study is done to assess the level of organizational commitment among nurses in a private hospital in Trichy. The researcher has measured the three dimensions of organisational commitment, namely affective commitment, normative commitment and continuance commitment and the overall commitment of nurses towards their hospital. All the three dimensions are distinct and contribute to the overall organizational commitment of employees. As for normative commitment, the employees feel a strong need for being committed to their employer; normative commitment is more of an intrinsic motivation where employee feels intrinsically motivated notwithstanding the nature of the job, the organizational support, favourable work environment, the monetary rewards of the job etc. Individual characteristics influence commitment (normative). Continuance commitment is a more precise indicator of organizational commitment as it indicates the intention of continued loyalty (commitment) to the employer. Absence of alternative employment options, the dire need of having to work and earn money influence continuance commitment. Affective commitment occurs due to the organizational climate, job characteristics, job satisfaction and extrinsic motivation. The researcher has offered suggestions to enable the organization to improve the level of commitment among nurses. Statistical tools such as Factor Analysis, reliability, Multiple Regression and ANOVA have been used.
